TMJ and TMD: the difference
TMJ means the temporomandibular joint. TMD describes disorders affecting the jaw joints and chewing muscles. Jaw pain, stiffness, or restricted movement can have several explanations; symptoms alone do not establish a diagnosis.
Discussing your symptoms
Tell the dentist when discomfort began, whether your jaw locks, and how eating or opening your mouth is affected. Bring earlier dental reports and details of previous treatment. Assessment may involve examination and, where appropriate, imaging or referral.
A considered approach
Conservative approaches are generally preferred before irreversible changes to teeth, the bite, or the joints. Ask about the benefits, limitations, and alternatives of any recommendation. Crowns or bite changes should not be assumed to cure TMD.

Does jaw clicking always need treatment?
Painless clicking is common and does not necessarily require treatment. Pain, locking, or limited movement should be discussed with a dentist or doctor.
Is all facial pain caused by TMD?
No. Dental and other conditions can cause facial pain. An assessment is needed rather than assuming the jaw joint is responsible.
